Coat and Toy Drive for Children

From Western member, Bob Layton:

I’ve appreciated the chances I’ve had to help others here in Washington, and would like to share a request now for help needed elsewhere. For many years I’ve helped a group assist children in dire need in the easternmost part of eastern Kentucky.  Coats, hats, gloves, and toys are distributed each December to children who otherwise would go without these items.

This area is in the easternmost part of Pike County, an area that has been experiencing extreme economic downturns for over a decade.  The main industry of coal mining is nearly gone, and drug abuse by parents is rampant.  Children are usually raised by grandparents, in the kind of shocking conditions that LBJ found in his war on poverty.  I’ve attached photos from previous trips there.

This year the organizers report an unprecedented need.  There are 55 children that need help this year, which is more than the assisting group can handle.

This is a need that at this moment will not be met.  Part of that need is as basic as ensuring the child is able to keep warm in the winter.  If you can help meet this need, please consider donating.  I am traveling to the area on November 23, and I will gladly pick up and deliver any new coats, hats, gloves or toys that you are able to donate.  If you prefer to contribute by check, it will be spent entirely on purchasing coats, hats, gloves and toys. This is a 501(c)(3) tax deductible entity.

I can pick up any checks, or you can mail them directly. The clothing and toys will be delivered on December 17, so please mail any checks in time to be received by December 10.

Although they’re distributed at a Presbyterian church, the distribution is not limited.  There are no religious services or church membership requirements for the distribution.

If you would like to contribute by check, please make the check out to:

Meadowthorpe Presbyterian Church
(in the note or subject section please state “coats and toys”)
356 Hillsboro Avenue
Lexington, KY 40511,

or I’ll be glad to stop by and pick up any checks, clothes, or toys you would like delivered.

Thank you for considering this request.  There is an unusually large need this year.  This is a 501(c)(3) activity and is tax deductible as a charitable contribution.  Please feel free to share this request with any friends who may be interested in considering it as well.
