News from Tom Beveridge, Director of Music

October 26, 2017

After 23 years as Director of Music at Western (hard to believe!), I have decided to retire from that position as of September 1, 2018.

I wanted to serve the congregation during the period of transition of pastors and I feel it is time to step down. I shall not take another church position (I started church work at the age of 8, working as a professional soprano at St. Thomas Chapel in New York City) but will continue as Artistic Director of New Dominion Chorale and National Men’s Chorus and look forward to more seasonal employment.

I want to thank the congregation for its steady support of the music program and for realizing that an excellent choir, such as we have, cannot be sustained without the means to pay professional singers. I have been fortunate to have worked with the finest singers in the area, both professional and amateur.

I am grateful to Jean Johnson for introducing me to John Wimberly, who immediately hired me, and with whom I had a very special relationship. I thank Laura Cunningham for her steady support of my musical ideas and for the help that Nancy, Gaston, and Shenella have been whenever I needed it.
