On Tuesday, April 11, the Session met with John Molina-Moore, the pastor that Western is considering as a possible Parish Associate for Community Life, a 20-hour-a-week position. John preached at Western on February 19. He would be charged with helping the congregation grow by:
- working with members to create a new worship opportunity that would be an alternative to Sunday mornings
- building small groups for long-time members and newcomers to grow in faith
- doing outreach in Foggy Bottom, at George Washington University, and with young adults
- developing a faith partnership with Northminster Presbyterian, a predominantly African American congregation in Silver Spring
Session members were impressed by John’s energy and spirit-filled enthusiasm. He has exciting ideas about helping Western reach out to new members, enriching our spiritual life together through small groups and a new worship opportunity, and building a meaningful relationship with Northminster.
The next step in the process is for members from Northminster and Western to meet together — likely with someone from the Presbytery’s Committee on Ministry — to discuss what it would mean for John to work 20 hours a week at each church.
A number of John’s sermons are available online at http://calvarypcusa.org/wp/sermons-2.
Another highlight of the meeting:
Rev. Laura Cunningham will receive her Doctor of Ministry on May 20. Congratulations, Laura!
